Four Ways to Relieve Pain Naturally!

4 Ways to relieve pain naturally

The new year tends to inspire us all to make positive changes in our life. The most popular New Year’s resolution by far is to become more active and live a healthier lifestyle. That is not always easy to do if you find yourself dealing with chronic pain. A stiff neck or sore low back can deter us from hitting the gym or even making nutritious meal choices. With the first month of the year almost behind us, it’s more important now than ever to get pain under control and achieve your goals! Here are four ways that can help alleviate pain naturally.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic adjustments can help remove pain and injuries like sciatica, neck pain, low back pain and headaches. Dr. Ressler treats many conditions with an adjusting instrument called an "activator". It is a spring-loaded instrument that sends a gentle force into the joint and moves it back into position. The activator method is low force, precise and does not involve cracking or twisting. This method can also help injuries to the wrists, shoulders, knees and ankles. Our patients love this method because it is absolutely pain free and gives them fantastic results!

Massage

Massage therapy is not only great for relaxation and reducing stress; it works on the soft tissues to release muscle tension and break up scar tissue. Massage is also beneficial for increasing levels of oxygen in the blood, circulation and flexibility. Massage therapy significantly improves range of motion, assists the lymphatic system and improves the elimination of waste throughout the body. Regular massage can have the effect of strengthening and toning the entire body. If you are experiencing more localized pain that radiates it could be a 'trigger point." Trigger points are areas of muscle dysfunction that cause pain locally or may refer to other parts of the body. Our board-certified therapists have advanced training to alleviate the source of the pain and prevent future muscle concerns. Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center offers sports massage, deep tissue, neuromuscular therapy and lymphatic drainage. Every massage is tailored to a patient’s specific needs, injuries and concerns.

Exercise/Stretching

Regular exercise keeps your body in balance, helps relieve pain, assists in weight loss and improves your overall mood. Exercising helps you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight because it causes your body to burn more calories. It also improves your muscle tone and strength. Having strong muscles helps keep your vertebra aligned and can alleviate pain associated with disc bulges and herniations. The muscle acts as a safety belt and supports the area. When your muscles are stronger everyday activities are easier to do, so you have more energy. The amount of exercise you should get differs for everyone and depends on many factors. is also important that you incorporate stretching, especially after a gym session. Stretching increases blood flow to your muscles and improves your flexibility. When your muscles are limber and flexible you have optimal range of motion in your joints. By having proper range of motion, you lower your risk of getting injured and it enables your muscles to work optimally. Dr. Ressler has helped many patients obtain more flexibility by prescribing certain stretches and techniques. He can also instruct you on how to maintain proper form while exercising and stretching.

Sleep

If you are constantly waking up feeling sore and tired it could be due to the position you sleep in. Fatigue, headaches and back pain are just some of the symptoms that are often aggravated by improper sleep posture. It is important to sleep in the same position as if you are standing erect; with, the most common sleeping position being on your side. In proper position, your head should stay centered to your shoulders parallel with the bed. A pillow should be placed between the thighs and knees. Your legs should also be parallel to the bed. This supports the lower back allowing the spine to stay aligned while you rest.  An improper sleeping position leaves the top leg unsupported, the leg tends to slide forward towards the mattress which causes the spine to rotate. The slight rotation can cause the spine to be misaligned which creates lower back and hip pain. Sleeping on your back is also recommended with a thin pillow under your neck and a pillow behind your legs. The only position Dr. Ressler does not recommend is sleeping on your stomach. This tends to flatten the spine and cause pain.  Dr. Ressler will recommend proper sleep posture ergonomics to allow you to feel rested and rejuvenated the next day.
