What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The median nerve is located at the base of the neck and top of the shoulders. It is one of two nerves that travel off the spine down the arm and crosses over the wrist. The median nerve is responsible for movement of the lower arm, wrist, and hand.

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway from the forearm to the wrist located on the palm side of the hand. The carpal bones are what make up the wrist joint. When the carpal tunnel muscles are tight, the carpal bones become misaligned, or injured it can put pressure on the median nerve. This compression of the median nerve is what causes “carpal tunnel syndrome.”

Carpal tunnel syndrome is common in people who perform repetitive motions of the hand and wrist. Typing on a keyboard, sewing, driving, painting, writing, playing musical instruments and sports can all cause carpal tunnel. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may be felt instantly or develop over time.

Symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Sharp or shock sensation in the fingers

  • Hand weakness

  • Inability to hold objects

  • Numbness and tingling that radiates up the arm

  • Burning, tingling, itching or numbness in your palm, thumb, index, and middle fingers

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to seek medical attention. If you do not treat your carpal tunnel syndrome, the median nerve will not function properly due to the pressure and pain. As carpal tunnel syndrome progresses it may lead to loss of feeling in the fingers, loss of strength, and inability to use the thumb properly. If left untreated, uneven pressure remains on the area creating excess wear and tear. This will cause the joint to break down faster than normal. This type of deterioration may lead to long term or even permanent damage. Therefore, it is important to receive proper treatment promptly for carpal tunnel syndrome.
