Sciatica symptoms can vary from a mild ache to excruciating pain. Most people experience a sharp, burning sensation that can feel like a jolt or electric shock. It is usually accompanied by numbness, tingling and muscle weakness in one of the legs. Sciatic pain often starts gradually and intensifies over time. The pain is likely to feel worse when you bend down, sit, cough or sneeze.

What Causes Sciatica Pain?

Sciatica pain typically stems from some type of trauma, accident and/or disc degeneration. Car accidents are just one of many typical sources of sciatica pain. You may experience sciatica symptoms after you have been in an auto accident, even if you have no history of back injury or pain. Herniations of the low back are also a common injury as the result of an auto accident. Located inside your discs is a material with a jelly-like consistency that serves as the cushioning between the vertebrae in the spine. This gelatinous substance is like a shock absorber inside the disc is what keeps the space between the vertebrae. This prevents the vertebra from rubbing against each other and allows appropriate space for the nerves to properly exit off the spine. A herniation or herniated disc is when the disc’s gel-like material becomes pushed out in one or multiple directions. This protrusion causes irritation, inflammation, and common symptoms of sciatica pain.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

If you have recently been involved in an auto accident, but are not experiencing sciatica symptoms, it is still imperative that you receive an evaluation. Florida law states that you must be evaluated within 14 days of the accident, or you will lose all your auto related medical personal injury protection benefits. Symptoms of injuries like sciatica may not be present until days or weeks after the accident. If you fail to receive an evaluation within the 14-day timeframe, you will be responsible for paying out of pocket for your entire treatment. You are not required to go to the ER for your evaluation. The ER can be very costly and use up most of your medical treatment benefits. Unless you have a life-threatening injury, you can see an Oviedo chiropractor first. DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE. Treatment for Sciatica

Sometimes your back gets sore after doing work around the house. This soreness may last a day or so but goes away and does not return. If this is the case, then simple stretching and ice is needed. But if the pain continues or comes back frequently, then it should be checked out. As a compassionate and caring chiropractor in Oviedo, Dr. Ressler tells patients that, “even though low back pain is very common, you should never try to treat yourself at home.” He always recommends being properly evaluated. Untreated injuries may become life-long conditions. Therefore, a proper analysis of the injury and treatment plan is crucial. This prevents the disc from protruding further out of place which will cause more irritation, inflammation and prolong recovery. Fortunately, there are several effective all-natural treatment options available at Dr. Ressler’s Oviedo chiropractic clinic.

Dr. Ressler is one of the highly trained chiropractors in Oviedo, FL that uses a special flexion/distraction table. The flexion distraction table is a state-of-the-art table designed for disc decompression. By using gentle traction, the flexion/distraction table increases joint mobility and relieves pressure on your discs. It serves as an effective treatment for herniated discs without having to twist or crack the low back. The flexion/distraction table is also considered to be a conservative alternative treatment option to prevent surgery.

Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center’s, Dr. Ressler offers another effective low force chiropractic treatment called the “activator technique.” The activator technique is done by using an innovative handheld instrument called an “activator” that only corrects the specific joint out of alignment. By using an activator instrument, Dr. Ressler can treat sciatica pain more precisely without excess force and twisting or cracking. The activator method is a patient favorite as it is stress and pain free when compared to the typical manual adjustment.

Massage and physical therapy are two more successful sciatica treatment options that Oviedo chiropractors like Dr. Ressler use. Dr. Ressler works directly with Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center’s board-certified massage therapists. Together they provide a customized massage and physical therapy treatment protocol to alleviate pain as quickly as possible. He will also teach you specific stretches that you can do at home to assist your body’s ability to heal optimally.
