Flexion Distraction Table May Be Your Non-Surgical Solution to Treat Your Herniated Disc!

Dr. Ressler’s Flexion Distraction Table May Be Your Non-Surgical Solution to Treat Your Herniated Disc!

What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc is the term used when the natural jelly-like substance inside the spinal discs become pushed out from their normal positioning between the vertebrae. Discs act like shock absorbers in the spinal column giving space for the nerves to exit from the spine cord and travel to different parts of the body. The spine is made of individual vertebral/bone segments stacked on top of each other. There is a disc between each vertebra. Dr. Ressler explains to his patients in his Oviedo chiropractic office to “imagine that your discs are like a jelly donut. There is soft pulpous material located inside the disc like the jelly in the donut. When there is trauma or an injury, this pulpous material can get pushed out and rub against the nerves. This protrusion of the discs is what produces pain and inflammation.”

Herniations usually occur in the neck and lower back but can affect any disc in the spine. An injury or some type of trauma is typically the main cause of a herniated disc, but not the only one. A herniation can also be caused by aging and disc degeneration or “ degenerative disc disease."

Oviedo chiropractors often treat patients suffering from herniations due to an auto accident or motorcycle accident. Dr. Ressler has over 25 years of experience helping patients heal from car accident injuries in his chiropractic Oviedo office. He is very knowledgeable and advises his patients that, “if you have been recently involved in an auto or motorcycle accident, Florida state law requires you receive an evaluation within 14 days of the accident.” However, if you fail to get an evaluation within the 14 days, you will lose the ALL the medical coverage related to the accident.  He also explains to patients that, “unless your injuries are life threatening, you don’t need to go to the E.R.” In fact, you can be evaluated by a local doctor or an Oviedo chiropractor. An evaluation at the emergency room can cost $1000-$2000 dollars. If Ct scans expose you to extensive radiation and the cost can be $10,000-$12,000 dollars. Unless you are severely injured, these services can be done at other facilities at a fraction of the cost. Normanlly an MRI is the best diagnostic study to have, and hospitals do not have this service. Dr. Ressler will assess your injuries and get you to the appropriate services including orthopedics, pain management and diagnostic studies. Use your benefits wisely.

Dr. Ressler advises NEVER to wait to be seen as symptoms of pain and discomfort may not be felt for days or even weeks after a car accident. Unfortunately, some people wait too long to be evaluated because they do not realize they are injured. If you take this approach, you risk losing your coverage because by the time there is an indication of an injury the 14 days may have already passed. The best approach is to get evaluated within 14 days and have it documented. You do not have to treat if you don’t want to and then you can see how you feel over the next few months. If issues come up, then you are still able to treat.  In addition, without a proper diagnosis and treatment this type of injury may cause suffering for the rest of your life. Always remember that the quicker you receive proper treatment determines the quality of your recovery. That is why it is so important to schedule an appointment with a trusted Oviedo chiropractor like Dr. Ressler. This will ensure that you recover from all your injuries, including the ones you may be unaware of.

If you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc there is an all-natural treatment option available for you at Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center. Our Oviedo chiropractic office offers spinal decompression therapy which may prevent surgery.

What is spinal decompression?

According to WebMD.com,  “Nonsurgical spinal decompression is a type of motorized traction that may help relieve back pain. Spinal decompression works by gently stretching the spine. That changes the force and position of the spine. This change takes pressure off the spinal disks, which are gel-like cushions between the bones in your spine, by creating negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated disks may retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This in turn, helps promote movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks so they can heal.”

Spinal or disc decompression is a gentle therapy that stretches the vertebrae in the spine increasing the space between them. This relieves the pressure on the nerves and helps the discs move back into their proper position.

Our chiropractic Oviedo office features a specialized spinal decompression machine called the “flexion/distraction” table. The flexion distraction table is designed to alleviate the pressure from the compressed discs. The table is motorized and operates by using a traction mechanism to allow for spine to be decompressed. This function gently pulls your vertebrae apart allowing the protruding “jelly” like material to return to between the discs. The flexion distraction table is a highly effective yet extremely gentle hands-on approach to treat herniated discs without any forceful twisting of cracking of the lower back. The spinal decompression therapy offered in our chiropractic Oviedo office is completely painless and takes only 10 to 15 minutes. Most Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center patients get significant pain reduction in only one visit although multiple visits are needed to reach optimal results. Another great feature of the flexion distraction table is that it may be an alternative option to herniated disc surgery. Surgery is costly and requires a long recovery time. Because spinal decompression can return normal function to the discs it provides a far less expensive treatment option that requires no downtime. This makes the flexion distraction table an ideal treatment for herniated discs, degenerative disc disease and auto accident injuries.
