Improper sleep posture may be the cause of your restless nights and stressful days. Sleeping in an improper position can lead to fatigue and aggravate symptoms such as headaches and back pain. Proper sleep position can be achieved in two positions. On your side or on your back is best. When sleep on your side it is important to sleep in the same position as if you are standing up straight. In a proper sleep position, your head should stay centered to your shoulders parallel with the bed. Your pillow needs to support your head and neck in this neutral position.  Also place a pillow between your thighs and knees in order to keep both legs parallel to the bed. This prevents your top leg from rolling forward. This will support your lower back and allow your spine to stay aligned while you rest.  Dr. Ressler, chiropractor near Winter Springs, FL recommends that you also sleep on your back with a thin pillow under your neck. A pillow under your legs will cause the low back muscles to relax.  The only position Dr. Ressler does not recommend is sleeping on your stomach. He says that “this tends to flatten the spine and cause pain.” When you come to see Dr. Ressler at Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center, he will recommend proper sleep posture ergonomics that will allow you to get a full night’s rest and have a stress-free holiday!
