How to avoid injuries while working from home or in office

Due to the recent Covid-19, many of us are working from our homes. This has created increased problems like neck, mid and low back pain. Headache and carpal tunnel syndrome are also a common complaint from excessive repetitive activities such as computer work.  Having an ergonomically designed workstation whether you are in the office or at home will increase productivity and prevent repetitive stress injuries. That is why ergonomics play an important role in letting you perform your work duties but not suffer after long day of work.

Neck pain is one of the most common complaints from our patients. An ergonomically incorrect workstation will cause you to hold your head at an awkward angle while working on your computer. Therefore, over time you will develop neck pain. If left untreated, the injuries can grow worse and lead to loss of mobility. Another popular injury that occurs in the workplace is called “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.”  Carpal Tunnel is caused when the trans carpal ligament overstretches and puts excess pressure the median nerve. Typing, sewing, driving, painting, writing, playing musical instruments and sports repetitively can cause or exacerbate carpal tunnel. Symptoms include numbness and tingling and/or loss of motor function in the fingers. Dr. Ressler, Oviedo Chiropractor, uses the “Activator Method” to adjust extremities such as wrists, elbows, knees, and ankles to alleviate pain. This special tool called an “Activator” corrects misalignments of the exact bone/vertebrae that is out of place. It involves no twisting or cracking of the neck or low back and is pain free. Dr. Ressler also uses “trigger point therapy” to release trigger points deep in your muscle that cause muscle imbalances and decreased range of motion.  By removing your trigger points, he will alleviate your pain and allow you to work without discomfort.

Working in a cramped and tight environment will have negative effects on your body.  When you work in a space that is too small, you are forced to hold yourself in an awkward position.  This puts pressure on your muscles, ligaments and tendons that will undoubtedly cause pain. Make sure you find a room and a surface to work (desk, kitchen table, side table, etc.) on that offers enough space for your legs and feet. To support your back while you are in a sitting position, roll up a hand towel into a cylinder and place it just above the belt line between your back and the chair.  This will support the natural curve you have in the low back. Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center offers fantastic lumbar supports that you can purchase in office for only $15! Our supports are specifically designed to be used in the workplace, home office or in the car. Patients rave about how our back supports have alleviated their pain and improved the quality of their work life!

When working on a computer, keep your screen at eye level so you do not have to tuck your chin down or raise your head to look up. This unnecessary strain will cause pain in your neck, upper back, shoulders, as well as, headaches. Whether you are working from home or in the office it is imperative that you take a break during the day. Your body will get sore from sitting and working in a fixed position for a prolonged period. Standing up, stretching, and taking a break about even 60 to 90 minutes will help you stay focused on your work and will avoid cramping or strain.

Ergonomics are very important and improve productivity by allowing a job to be performed with correct posture and less exertion. If your workspace is ergonomic designed, you will not be reaching unnecessarily and will be able to perform a task with fewer motions. This in turn will make you more efficient at your job! Less effort and fewer motions mean you have less soreness and are not worn out at the end of the day. Dr. Ressler, Oviedo Chiropractor, will give you recommendations on how to make either your office or home office ergonomic. He will offer solutions that will allow you to use items that you already own to avoid any additional cost.

Remember that continuing to work in an environment with poor ergonomics will lead to frustration and fatigue. If your job task is physically taxing, you will not do your best work which could lead to an injury. Modifying your posture and workspace to be ergonomically correct will have a huge impact on the quality of your life!
