Ergonomics for home school

Due to COVID-19, children may be spending most of their time learning and receiving an education from home. In fact, because of the pandemic it seems that most families support the idea of an “at home school approach.”  Dr. Ressler, Oviedo chiropractor has been giving his patients recommendations to create an at homework environment that is not only comfortable, but ergonomically correct for years. These principals also apply to your child’s at home learning environment. An ergonomically sound home school area is key to not only ensuring your child stays productive but prevents poor posture which can lead to a lifetime of issues. any future injuries.

The first step is to find a designated learning space in your house that is free from distractions. It is crucial to create a dedicated area or room that your child can learn from online lessons, study, or do their homework. Keep in mind, that it does not have to take up an entire room. A corner in a quiet area where you can set up a small chair and desk will work just as well.

It is important to create a fun and attractive space that your child will look forward to spending time in. There are many different homeschooling décors and learning aids that can be found online. If you are looking for homeschool design inspiration, Pinterest is a great social media platform! Many parents use Pinterest to find ideas on how to create the perfect homeschool environment.

Once you have created a space for learning at home, it is time to find an ergonomically correct desk or table. If you have a younger, smaller child look for a “child-sized” desk that will not be too big for their height. An older child can use a standard “adult-sized” desk. Adjustable desks are also a great way to accommodate multiple children in the home or adjust to the perfect height. Just like the desk size, it is also important to select a chair that is the appropriate size for your child. They should be able to put their feet flat on the floor while still being able to put their back against the back portion of the chair. A rolled-up towel or small pillow placed right above the belt line and between your child’s back and the chair will support their spine while in a sitting position. This supports the natural curve in the low back. Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center also sells amazing lumbar supports that are designed to fit the natural curve of your spine. These mesh lumbar supports keep your back from sweating and will provide comfort all day! (Call 407-977-5005 and get one today for only $15!) Discourage your child from doing homework/schoolwork on the couch or in bed as this can lead to improper posture and pain. Instead, ensure they maintain a proper upright posture when sitting at their desk to prevent neck and back strain.

When using a computer, make sure to raise up the screen and position it directly in front of them at eye level. The top of the screen should be two inches above the top of your head. Many screens are designed to be adjustable. A great tip is to use household items such as books, magazines, or a crate to prop up a screen that can’t be raised. Keeping the screen at eye level will prevent them from holding their head in a protruding forward posture. This ergonomically incorrect position puts too much pressure on the neck muscles which cause pain and headaches.

For good sitting posture, shoulders should be relaxed and not elevated. Stop fighting gravity and reduce strain by lowering shoulders. Keep elbows close to your body. Your arms should form a 90-degree angle where the top of the arm and forearm meet at the elbow. Wrist should be flat/straight to reduce the overuse of your muscles in front of the hand. This can commonly lead to Carpal tunnel syndrome. Laptops are good for mobile use but bad for ergonomics. Make the laptop you screen and a wireless keyboard/mouse in your lap.

Remember that most children are used to attending class at school, so they may become bored and not engage fully when learning from home. It is important to keep learning material unique and challenging each day. Adding different daily activities will help your child to concentrate and stay focused. Keep things fun and interesting by including physical activities while learning. Supplement PE or recess time by encouraging your child to stay active throughout the day. This will help to release stress and prevent any aches or pains from being too stationary. Don’t forget that taking regular breaks is also key. This will prevent any mental drain or fog they may experience from their studies.
