No more Neck Pain

Neck issues getting you down??

Do you suffer from neck pain? Whether it is a new injury or have old injuries, you may experience neck pain on a consistent basis. Although neck pain is a common complaint, Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center has the treatment you need to give you relief. The causes of neck pain can vary widely. One example can be from whiplash, an injury sustained from an auto accident (even with little to no damage).  This usually can cause chronic neck pain because the energy produced from the impact forces the head to whip backward and then forward. This puts immense pressure on the tissues and ligaments that run on the back of your neck. This “whipping motion” of the head causes the muscles and tendons to overextend and tear. Over time if left untreated, the tears will heal damaged with scar tissue. This causes you to experience pain and loss of mobility in your neck. Remember the state law requires you to be seen and evaluated within 14 days of the car accident. If you do not receive an evaluation, you will lose your medical coverage! Sometimes you do not realize that you have been injured right after an accident. It could take days or weeks for your symptoms to appear. Dr. Ressler, Oviedo chiropractor states that, “some patients do not report any symptoms until the 14 days have passed.”  Unfortunately, after the 14 day rule it is too late and they have lost all their medical benefits. Don’t let this happen to you or a loved one. Call 407-977-5005 and schedule an appointment today!

Neck pain can also result from sleeping wrong. The key to stopping neck pain is not only a good pillow, but the thickness related to your head position. You need a pillow that has a firm support to keep your head in the same position throughout the night. The reason you toss and turn throughout the night is due to pressure points. The body moves you around because a particular area is being hurt or compressed. If you are sleeping on your side, the ideal position is to keep your spine straight line parallel with the mattress. The thickness of the pillow should keep your head centered on your shoulders while you are lying on your side. So even if a feather pillow is your favorite, then just make sure when it compresses from the weight of your head/neck, that your head does not tilt down or is angled upward.

If you find that your head is tilted, simply layer a towel thicker or flatter underneath your pillow. This will help to adjust your pillow to the correct height that you need. Place an additional pillow or towel between your legs to prevent the top leg rolling forward and twisting your low back.

If you sleep on your back, you should use a very thin pillow. The pillow should slightly tilt your head back and be placed between the base of your skull and the top of the shoulders. Another pillow should be placed under the back of the legs. This will support the low back and help the muscles to relax.

Another way neck injury can occur is when you keep your head at an odd position while working. Ergonomics play an important role in avoiding injury in the workplace! Because nearly 60 percent of the workforce will spend their entire working life in an office setting. Having an ergonomically designed workstation that conforms to your specific duties will increase productivity, but more importantly it will minimize repetitive stress injuries, and reduce exacerbation of your current issues.
