Tennis Elbow

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tennis elbow is a term used to describe pain in the elbow region. This is usually caused from repetitive movements performed by the hand, wrist, and elbow. The term “tennis elbow” doesn’t necessarily mean that it only affects tennis players. Any repetitive and forceful movement performed many times to the elbow joint can lead to a tennis elbow injury. Gardening, typing, golfing, playing an instrument or a sport along with many other activities can all cause tennis elbow. Even though tennis elbow most often affects adults, people of all ages can suffer from this injury.

How do I know if I have tennis elbow?

The most common complaint is pain that extends from the elbow into the forearm down to the wrist. The muscles and tendons in the forearm that are attached to the outside of the elbow become inflamed and swollen. The swelling and inflammation are what causes the pain and limited range of motion associated with tennis elbow. In some cases, the swelling can compress the nerves leading to numbness and tingling in the entire arm. If you suffer from tennis elbow you may also experience weakness when performing a twisting or grabbing motion.
