Experiencing heel pain or in your foot? It may be Plantar fasciitis.

What is plantar fasciitis?

The term “plantar fasciitis” refers to pain experienced in the foot or heel region. There is a flat band of ligaments and fascia that connects to the heel bone in the back a of the foot and fans out to each of the bones that make up your toes, called the “plantar fascia”. The plantar fascia acts as a support to maintain the arch of your foot. When the arch is maintained, it absorbs any shocks or pressure from walking, running, climbing stairs and all other foot movements. This enables you to bounce when you walk rather than your foot slamming/slapping onto the ground.

What causes plantar fasciitis?

Abnormal walking/running/standing over time can cause this condition. Therefore, it is important to have proper footwear.  If your shoes don’t always provide adequate foot support this creates increased stress and weight distribution onto the joints. Over time this can lead to pain and even arthritis.  Plantar fasciitis, a common form of pain in the heel often goes hand in hand with unproper foot support. Wearing shoes that don’t give proper structure to your foot’s arch may cause the plantar fascia band to become damaged from too much strain. As a result, pain and inflammation will begin to occur. Symptoms of plantar fasciitis include stiffness and general pain in the foot when performing activities. Pain may be felt in the heel only or radiate from the foot up into the leg. This can affect your ability to walk properly which may cause issues in other parts of the body.

Are you experiencing plantar fasciitis pain, but wear shoes that offer proper arch support? Many factors can be the cause of plantar fasciitis, not just improper footwear. Issues in the low back or pelvis can create issues into the legs and feet. The different joints of the body are designed to handle a specific amount of strain/weight. When individual joints get overloaded then degeneration and pain can occur.  Strenuous exercise or standing for long periods of time can also contribute to pain from plantar fasciitis.
