Dr. Ressler uses innovative and gentle chiropractic techniques to treat neck pain.

Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center’s chiropractor, Dr. Ressler uses innovative and gentle chiropractic techniques to treat neck pain.

One of the most frequent complaints that Dr. Ressler, Oviedo chiropractor’s patients have is neck pain. The causes for neck pain vary widely from Tech neck, poor posture, sleeping wrong, auto accident injuries, and sitting at your desk to long. These injuries all are related to how the neck is designed. The neck is strong enough to support your head which weighs nine pounds. It also has the incredible flexibility for movement. The significant flexibility aspect of the neck makes it, so the muscles/tissues are more vulnerable to injury.

A common neck injury is whiplash. Rear end car accidents almost always lead to some form of whiplash. The impact causes the head to whip backward and then forward. This motion puts an immense pressure on the ligaments and muscles holding the joints together. When over stretched, the ligaments/muscles get tears in the fibers and causes pain, muscle tightness, weakness, and pain. Symptoms from whiplash range from severe pain and loss of mobility to occasional pain with minimal obvious symptoms. Even if you do not have any pain from your auto accident, you still may be injured. That is why it is important to seek chiropractic treatment immediately to avoid life-long issues. Without proper treatment the ligaments/muscles heal with scar tissue which has extremely limited range of motion and extensive pain sensitivity. If injuries are only minor, then treatment may only be a few weeks. If injuries ae extensive (ex. Must wear a neck brace) treatment may take months. The key is to get proper care quickly for best results.

Another common neck injury is referred to as a “pinched nerve.” The term “pinched nerve” is typically used to describe the pain associated with an injury, but these injuries don’t pinch the nerves. A pinched nerve is an irritated nerve caused by the bones or joints of the spine that are not in their proper position. It is more that the nerve gets irritated or rubbed against, which causes pain. Another way that the nerves can be irritated is with pressure from the disc. The discs between spinal bones have rings of fibrous tissues with a gel-like center, which function as spacers or “shock absorbers” for the spine. Trauma from an auto accident can cause the soft, gel-like material in the middle of the discs to bulge out. This puts pressure on the spinal nerves. When nerves become “pinched” from the pressure, inflammation occurs and affects the surrounding muscles along with causing pain. All too often, people with neck pain will wait until the pain becomes unbearable before they seek proper treatment. Unnecessarily prolonging your pain and waiting can result in long-term damage.

Why should I get a chiropractic adjustment to treat my neck pain? When a vertebra is out of alignment it irritates the spinal nerves causing pain, muscle spasms and swelling. It also inhibits the joint from moving properly or having full range of motion. Chiropractic adjustments are a safe and effective way to move the vertebra back into alignment. Once the joint is in proper position, the pain and swelling will be alleviated. Therefore, neck pain responds very well to chiropractic adjustments. Your neck is responsible for supporting your head, so it is especially important that the cause of your neck pain be correctly diagnosed. Receiving chiropractic treatment is also critical because long-term compression of a nerve may lead to permanent nerve damage.
