Rake leaves without getting an injury

When the leaves begin changing color, there is only one thing that they will do next. It’s Fall! Autumn leaves fall off the trees decorating the yard with an arrangement of red, yellow, and orange. As beautiful as that may sound, you might not be “falling in love” with fall thinking about the amount of raking you will need to do. Sit back and relax! Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center has got tips that can help you rake those leaves without pain and a potential injury.

Before you begin your yard work, make sure you do a warmup. Get your blood pumping and limber up your muscles with some light stretching and exercises. As an experienced chiropractor in Oviedo, Dr. Ressler can teach you specific exercises and stretches that cater to your conditions. However, in general he recommends marching in place for a few minutes. After marching, he suggests performing forward and backward shoulder rolls to warm up your upper body. Next pull your arm across your body and hold 20 seconds. Do it 4-5 times. Take your right foot and cross it over the left. Then bend forward like you are trying to touch your toes. Don’t bounce, but just hang there for 20 seconds. Do it 4-5 times on each side. This will loosen up the low back and the hamstrings at the same time. This will decrease your muscle soreness after you have finished and ward off your risk of a possible injury.

Use proper form! No matter which Oviedo chiropractic office you are treating with, all Oviedo chiropractors will tell patients to always “use proper form!” As a highly rated chiropractor in Oviedo, FL Dr. Ressler wants patients to live a pain-free life by teaching them proper ergonomics. He tells Oviedo Injury and Wellness Center patients that, “when lifting items, squat down, bending at your knees. Keep the object close to your body and use your legs to lift it.” He also tells patients to make sure your back is straight. Don’t twist or turn your body and never lift an object that is heavy above shoulder level.

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Choose clothing that is breathable and easy to move in. This will help you stay cool and allow you to have full range of motion. You are more likely to pull a muscle or get hurt by wearing restrictive clothing that doesn’t allow you to move properly. In addition to your clothing, wear shoes that offer proper support for your feet. This will reduce joint pressure and prevent foot discomfort.

Even though it’s not hot, make sure to stay hydrated! Drinking water is the number one way to keep your body hydrated. Make sure to consume at least 64 ounces of water a day. Drink throughout the day to have a continuous supply of fluids for your body.

Boost your immunity! The immune system defends your body against illness causing foreign invaders like bacteria, viruses, allergens, and toxins. The nervous system acts as the communication pathway from the brain to the entire body. This pathway of nerves manages all bodily systems by sending a signal from the brain to the different components of the immune system. Misaligned vertebra irritates/compresses the nerve pathway interrupting the signals to the immune system. This obstruction causes a delay in the immune system’s response to defend against disease causing invaders. Because the immune system is not working efficiently, it allows bacteria, viruses, allergens, and toxins to multiply in the body quickly.

Dr. Ressler treats patients in his chiropractic Oviedo clinic with an adjusting device called an “activator.” The activator is designed to move the specific misaligned joint off the nerve and back into place. Once your joint has been restored to proper position, the nerve communication is reestablished. Now your immune system can function optimally. That is what makes chiropractic adjustments so great at boosting the support of your immune system.
